You are correct in that the license as such is not the narrowing factor, but the use of code in accordance with the license.Anders Sundelinhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02704816433435557846noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5357884563112855603.post-62020429737979408112009-03-06T15:43:00.000+01:002009-03-06T15:43:00.000+01:00Thanks for highlighting this article (which I will...Thanks for highlighting this article (which I will read in more detail later) and for the post.

One minor correction - the dual model consists having one version GPL (or other FLOSS license) for free (generally as in beer) and one version commercial/proprietary for a fee, not the GPL/BSD model you mention.

I haven't had time to read the underlying article in depth, so forgive me if it is in there. However you note that:

"the terms of a license determine what companies can do with their software, companies are implicitly narrowing the choice of business models when they select a license type"

I agree that choosing a license narrows your options and business models, but it is whether or not your own version that you produce _accepts community (IP) contributions_ (and how it does so). For example if you make GPL software but no one ever modifies it (or their modifications never make it into your code), then you have the option to take your code (and only your code) wholly proprietary or to offer a dual version.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com
